How to Host the Best Friendsgiving Feast

Informal dining room

Today, the “F” in TGIF now has a new meaning: Friendsgiving! Although usually the week before or after Thanksgiving, the beauty of celebrating this holiday is you get to make the rules. That includes your invite list (not just family), and what you eat.

Inspired by a popular sitcom in the 1990s, Friendsgiving gives you the freedom to celebrate togetherness on your terms. Check out more below on how to create new traditions and be the best Friendsgiving host for your friends.

Ditch the Dining Table

If you’re entertaining in a small space that doesn’t have a spacious dining area, change up the way you gather around for your meal. Host a movie marathon and bring your feast to the coffee table, ottoman or floor. You can use poufs for extra seating in a pinch.

Place a tablecloth or picnic blanket on your serving surface to prevent spills and lay the food out for everyone to pass around! Feel free to keep your dishes in the kitchen so everyone can self serve buffet style. This eliminates the worry about an elaborate place setting or clearing the table at the end of your meal.

Refresh the Holiday menu

Put a twist on the Friendsgiving menu by deviating from the typical turkey and cranberry sauce menu and hosting a multicultural potluck! Ask each guest to bring a dish from their culture or heritage that reminds them of home. It’s an easy way to bring friends together for a special day and share stories.

You can even change up the appetizer and dessert portions of your evening by serving a grazing table for your guests to select their favorites! The open spread adds color to your serving area and it’s delicious decor.

Want a simpler option? Try a pizza-making party! Ask your friends to bring in their favorite toppings or sides that they eat with a pie. Things might get messy, but that’s all part of the fun!

Decorate Together

Let this day mark the beginning of the holiday season. Keep your mantel bare or your Christmas tree unlit, and use decorating and placing ornaments as an activity for you and your guests to enjoy together. It’s a great way to get into the spirit of the season and bond after the meal. You can even play holiday tunes early (don’t worry, we won’t tell if it’s before Thanksgiving).

Ask each of your guests to share their favorite winter-time traditions and stories, you might hear one you’d like to start yourself!
